ΑΛΛΕΣ ΠΛΗΡΟΦΟΡΙΕΣ:   The main goal of this lecture is to take a close look at political power in Ottoman Cyprus during the first half of the 19th century. This period sees the unfolding of a process to strengthen local power. The process had begun much earlier and was bound to trigger significant changes in the power game of 19th century Ottoman Cyprus. This process also involved a number of local uprisings. A first-level analysis would perhaps interpret local uprisings solely as a reaction to the Sublime Porte's policies. Alternatively, these uprisings can be taken to constitute a privileged domain of negotiation among many different protagonists, such as the local powers, the Sublime Porte and the rebels. Arguably, even though the administrative centre typically dictates policies and local powers typically implement those policies, the relationship between the two was multi-layered and it varied across periods of Ottoman history.
