image Seminar titled "Constructions of European Identity"
Start Date:

Event type: Life-long Learning - FACULTY OF LETTERS

Description

This seminar is proposed in the context of YUFE Skills Initiative and will take place as a three-hour session. The seminar is open to everyone interested, however, priority will be given to UCY graduates and members of YUFE (staff/students) During the seminar, I will present and discuss a number of historical sources (texts) originating from antiquity to the present, which provide the reader/researcher with evidence as to how the European identity was constructed throughout the centuries (what were/are its constituent elements, how these change throughout the centuries, and how this identity is reshaped according to historical circumstance). Participants of the seminar will ponder on the notion of European identity and will familiarise themselves with the differentiation of the constituent element of this identity throughout the centuries. Through problematising the notion and analysing it through a number of primary sources, participants will be able to assess the extent to which this identity is fixed, and the circumstances which affect it. Participants will also understand the role of voluntary adoption of such an identity. Through this analysis, the seminar will also stress the role of school education (and particularly the subjects of literature, history, and language learning) in this process. Some of the conclusions of this seminar will also have a bearing upon our perception of the future of the European Union. Target audience: The seminar is open to everyone interested, however, priority will be given to UCY graduates and members of YUFE (staff/students).
