The Master in Economic Analysis is the natural starting point for students who wish to pursue a Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Cyprus and do not already hold a research-oriented Master’s degree.

The language of instruction is English.

The typical duration of the programme is three semesters.

Initial deadline for applications: 31/03/2023

Second Evaluation Round: 30/04/2023

Final Deadline: 30/06/2023

Applications received after the initial deadline are evaluated on a rolling basis. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to ensure that they can be evaluated while there are still available positions and funding opportunities.

Funding:

The Department provides funding opportunities to selected candidates. These include scholarships that cover the tuition fees of the programme and, in some cases, additional financial aid through employment by the Department as teaching or research assistants.

Typically, the initial offer of financial support covers the first year of studies and its renewal depends mainly upon the student’s performance in the programme.

Students who are not financed during their first year of studies are still evaluated regarding the possibility of receiving financial support in subsequent years.

The Department tries its best to clarify the financial support that incoming students should expect as soon as possible. Oftentimes, this is done already when the Department offers a position to the applicant in the programme or soon after that.

The Committee submits their recommendation to the Departmental Council, which has the final say on offering a position in the programme.

Students must always refer to the University's' Postgraduate Study Rules.

During the first two semesters, the students take two core courses in each of the three core areas of Economic Theory: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics, as well as one course of Analytical Methods and one elective course. During the third semester, students either take four more field courses that give them the opportunity to acquire expertise in the research area they are interested in, or they write a master thesis.

The performance in the core courses of the first year is an important factor that affects the eligibility of a student to continue to the Ph.D. programme. For more detailed information on these rules, please visit the webpage of the Ph.D. in Economics and the Ph.D. handbook.

The exams of courses are conducted according to the rules described in the Postgraduate Study Rules.

The grading system is numerical, from 0 to 10 with increments of 0.5. The minimum passing grade is 5. The final grade of a graduate student is calculated as the grade point average of all courses passed by the student. In a postgraduate programme of study, courses can be graded as Success/Failure. These courses do not count towards the student’s GPA, and may not exceed 25% of the programme’s ECTS, with the exception of the dissertation units. All courses are presented in the Postgraduate Studies Prospectus. The Master Thesis is graded qualitatively as Excellent, Very Good, Good, and Fail.
