Profile of Programme

The programme is designed to help develop researchers and scholars who can apply theoretical frameworks, methodological approaches, and analytical skills to improve quality and equity in education. More specifically, the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Educational Administration and Evaluation programme prepares individuals to develop expertise in educational research methods in the areas of educational administration, teacher and school evaluation, educational effectiveness and school improvement. Graduates of the programme are, therefore, prepared for academic positions in the field of educational administration and evaluation and as research methodologists; corporate positions in research, evaluation, and testing agencies; or government positions as researchers, evaluators, or administrators of research programmes in education.

Key Learning Outcomes

By the end of the programme, students will have demonstrated:

·       abilities in designing and conducting rigorous studies within the field of educational administration and evaluation which can contribute to the theoretical development of this field;

·       broad knowledge and systematic understanding of the research field of educational administration and evaluation as well as advanced and up-to-date specialised knowledge in a limited area of this field;

·       comprehensive understanding of research techniques, and a thorough knowledge of the literature applicable to their specific domain within the field of educational administration and evaluation;

·       originality in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in the field of educational administration and evaluation;

·       abilities in the critical evaluation of current research and research techniques and methodologies;

·       the ability in both national and international contexts to present and discuss research findings in speech and writing and in dialogue with the academic community and society in general;

·       the ability to make assessments of ethical aspects of their own research, and;

·       insight into the possibilities and limitations of their research, its role in society and the responsibility of the individual regarding its use.

Students can be register in PhD Research Stage or PhD Thesis Writing Stage during the Fall or Spring or Summer Semester. 

Conditions of Study

The number of places available are announced by the Graduate School with the eligibility criteria for candidates, as well as other required documents that must be attached to the application such as:
Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University.
Previous University education in a suitable subject (academic background) and grades of relevant degrees.
Letters of recommendation.
Personal interview and/or written examination (if provided by the Department’s internal rules).
Submission of preliminary research proposal for admission to a doctoral course (if provided by the Department’s internal rules).
The Department may also set additional criteria and quality indicators such as: (a) number of students’ publications in scientific journals, (b) students’ participation in seminars, symposia, research programmes, (c) presentations by students at conferences, (d) knowledge of foreign languages, and (e) professional experience, etc.

Students must always advise the University's' Postgraduate Study Rules   

Successful completion of the requirements of the Program
Up to 60 ECTS may be exempted from postgraduate courses.

The diploma dissertation, thesis, research and writing stages are graded with Success / Failure. The final grade of the dissertation is registered in the last semester of its elaboration. The doctoral dissertation is graded as Success or Failure.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The Program of “Educational Administration and Evaluation” concerns both in-service teachers and candidate teachers of all educational levels, from preschool to secondary education with research interests in the areas of educational administration and evaluation. Our PhD graduates could follow an academic career by teaching in Higher education institutions as faculty members, as special scientists or as research associates (including as postdoctoral students). They can also be employed in relevant jobs in research centres and in public sector’s positions related to the educational administration and evaluation offered by the Ministry of Education and Culture and as research staff in the Pedagogical Institute of Cyprus. Specifically, out of the 18 graduates of the program, an overwhelming majority (n=13) followed an academic career abroad and/or in Cyprus and/or managed to work as policy-makers responsible for the development of education policy in the Ministry of Education and Culture (n=4).
