Profile of Programme

The objectives of the Postgraduate Program in Curriculum, Teaching and Comparative Education are the following:

1. Research on issues of curriculum design, development and evaluation as well as of analysis and evaluation of teaching and of the professional development of educators as researchers of education, able to inquire scientifically and reflect upon matters of curriculum, teaching and comparative education in an increasingly globalized/ internationalized world.

2. Promote curriculum and teaching theory, as well as the study of the philosophical, sociological, historical and comparative epistemological assumptions and principles which support scholarly dialogue in curriculum studies and comparative education.,

3. Promote and develop collaboration with universities and research centers in Europe and internationally on curriculum studies and comparative education.

4. Advance the study of and expertise on the areas of curriculum development and evaluation, teaching and teacher professional development as well as comparative education.

5. Prepare leaders and researchers who will be internationally and locally renowned and who understand the importance of the context within education exists, so that they can work creatively and efficiently in Cyprus, Europe and beyond.

6. Provide service to the academic community, the wider educational community and society.

In the context of these objectives, students will be given the freedom to develop their own program of studies tailored to their particular needs and interests.

Key Learning Outcomes

The program aims at the development of contemporary knowledge, methods and basic principles of inquiry in the field of education in an effort for students to:
- Enrich their way of thinking and skills as educators and researchers, able to scientifically study, reflect upon and discuss issues of curriculum, teaching and comparative education.
- Become leading members and researchers who will be internationally and locally renowned and will be able to understand the importance of the context within education exists in its diverse forms, so that they can act creatively and efficiently in Cyprus, Europe and beyond.

For the completion of Master Thesis I (EDU 798) and Master Thesis II (EDU 788), students can be exempted from two Restricted elective courses (one of the Specialization and one of the General Content. 

Conditions of Study

The number of places available are announced by the Graduate School with the eligibility criteria for candidates, as well as other required documents that must be attached to the application such as:
Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University.
Previous University education in a suitable subject (academic background) and grades of relevant degrees.
Letters of recommendation.
Personal interview and/or written examination (if provided by the Department’s internal rules).
Submission of preliminary research proposal for admission to a doctoral course (if provided by the Department’s internal rules).
The Department may also set additional criteria and quality indicators such as: (a) number of students’ publications in scientific journals, (b) students’ participation in seminars, symposia, research programmes, (c) presentations by students at conferences, (d) knowledge of foreign languages, and (e) professional experience, etc.

Successful completion of the requirements of the Program

The grading system is numerical, from 0 to 10 with increments of ½. The minimum passing grade is 5. The final grade of a graduate student is calculated as the grade point average of all courses passed by the student. 

In a postgraduate programme of study, courses can be graded as Success/Failure. These courses do not count towards the student’s GPA, and may not exceed 25% of the programme’s ECTS, with the exception of the dissertation units. All courses are presented in the Postgraduate Studies Prospectus.
The diploma dissertation, thesis, research and writing stages are graded with Success / Failure. The final grade of the dissertation is registered in the last semester of its elaboration. Master level dissertations are calculated qualitatively as Excellent, Very Good, Good, and Failure.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The majority of the graduates of the programme are working or have worked at the Ministry of Education and Culture, at the Pedagogical Institute and other services/agencies, as well as in pre-primary, primary and secondary (general and technical) education. Master graduates have also continued with their studies to a doctoral level. Some of them pursued an academic career holding positions in higher education institutions in Cyprus and abroad as academic or special teaching staff, as special scientists or as scientific collaborators. Finally, a number of graduates may work or has worked at local or international governmental or non-governmental organisations which offer formal and informal education programmes.
